All Acorn TV programs that are required under FCC rules to have closed captioning do so. Acorn TV falls under the FCC rules for Internet video programming, meaning that programming is required to be closed captioned if it has run on television with captions. Below we’ve included instructions for how you can access any captioning that we provide.
ROKU
While watching an Acorn TV program on your Roku device:
- Press the Star buttonon your Roku remote to open the Options menu
- Scroll up or down to highlight the Closed Captioning option
- Use the left or right button on your Roku remote to select your preferred captions option
From the Home screen of your Roku device:
- Scroll up or down and select Settings
- Select Accessibility or Captions (depending on your Roku model)
- Select Captions Mode and choose your preferred captions option

iPHONE & iPAD
To enable or disable captions on your Apple iPhone or iPad device:
- Open the Acorn TV app
- Select a TV show or film and start playing
- Select the headphone icon in the lower right corner
- Select your preferred language to enable or select “OFF” to disable
You can also control captions from the Home screen by selecting the “Settings” menu (the gear icon in the upper right corner) and toggling the “Closed Captions for All Video” option on or off.
APPLE TV
While watching an Acorn TV program on your Apple TV:
- Swipe down on your remote's Touch surface to reveal the Info panel
- Swipe right to see the Subtitles or Audio menus
- Swipe down and choose the option you want to enable or disable
If you want captions to be turned on for all programs by default:
- Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning
- Choose “Closed Captions and SDH” to turn it on

ANDROID DEVICES
To enable or disable captions on your Android device:
- Open the Acorn TV app
- Select a TV show or film and start playing
- Select the CC icon in the upper left corner
- Turn captions on or off
You can also control captions from the Home screen by selecting the “Settings” menu (the three dots in the top right corner) and checking or unchecking the “Global Closed Captioning” option.
ANDROID TV
While watching an Acorn TV program on your Android TV:
- Press Up twice on your Android TV remote
- Select your preferred language or disable captions
You can also turn captions on/off from the Home screen of your Android TV:
- Scroll down and select Settings
- Under “Preferences,” select Accessibility, then Captions
- Select Display and turn captions on or off
